- *NEEDS* it to be set the same way, i.e. either both set to retrain or both
- set not to. Otherwise, when a retrain is attempted, the modem with
- retraining off or not implemented doesn't know what to do, and may lose
- the carrier completely.

- A rate renogotiation taking a fraction of a second is pretty much
- transparent to the end user. It is not enough to cause any transfers to
- time out. The 30 or more seconds that it can take for a full v.34 retrain
- can easily cause timeouts, or even cancelled transfers. Therefore, a
- quick rate renegotiation is preferable to a full retrain, although I would
- have to agree that a full retrain is still preferable to losing the
- connection.
